To curb teenage pregnancies in the province, we collaborate with the KZN Department of Health and Social Development on a campaign to educate teenagers on the implications of pregnancy.
Our social workers are visiting high schools addressing various topics linked to teenage pregnancy.
The campaign which is a joint effort between the department as well as that of Education and non-governmental organisations will also look at Sexually Transmitted diseases including HIV and AIDS.
As of 2019, approximately five percent of females aged 14 to 19 years in South Africa stated that they were going through different stages of pregnancy within the last 12 months. The prevalence of pregnancy increased with age. While 0.4 percent of young women aged 14 stated that they were pregnant, the number of 19-year-old pregnant women was 32 times higher. Furthermore, pregnancy amongst women aged 19 years increased by 2.8 percentage points between 2018 and 2019.
